Dermaplaning has become increasingly familiar in the lexicon of skincare enthusiasts, refers to a non-invasive exfoliating treatment that has taken the beauty world by storm. This technique is not your average skincare routine; it involves a trained esthetician who skillfully uses a surgical scalpel to gently scrape the skin’s surface. The primary goal? To meticulously remove dead skin cells and vellus hair, commonly known as peach fuzz. This process not only reveals a fresher, smoother skin surface but also paves the way for a more effective skincare regimen, as products can penetrate the skin more efficiently.

What happens during the treatment?

Dermaplaning is done with a sterile  micro-blade held at a 45-degree angle and brushed along the surface of the skin to remove thin layers of excess skin cells and fine hairs. This is then  followed by a skin-soothing oil, or with our delux treatment, a mild ZO skin stimulation peel for extra exfoliation. The treatment is painless and does not require any numbing prior to treatment.

  • For individuals with acne-prone skin, dermaplaning can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it can help in removing dead skin cells that can clog pores and exacerbate acne. On the other hand, if performed on skin with active acne breakouts, it can irritate the skin and potentially spread bacteria, leading to more breakouts. Therefore, it’s crucial for individuals with acne-prone skin to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional before undergoing dermaplaning.

  • Dermatologists and skincare experts generally advise caution when it comes to dermaplaning for acne-prone skin. They may recommend waiting until active breakouts are under control before considering this treatment. Additionally, they can provide tailored advice and alternative treatments that might be more suitable for managing acne-prone skin while still achieving the benefits of exfoliation.

  • Overdoing dermaplaning can lead to adverse effects such as skin irritation and increased sensitivity. It’s crucial to adhere to the recommended frequency to avoid over-exfoliation, which can strip the skin of its natural oils and barrier, leading to more harm than good.

We love to combine Dermaplaning with Hydrafacial Treatment

We start by double cleansing the skin with an antibacterial cleanser, we then tone and blot the skin dry. We ‘scrape’ the scalpel across the very top layer of the upper dermis removing fine hair and dead skin.

This may sound alarming, but most people are so relaxed that they fall asleep during the treatment. Once we have completed the removal, we will cleanse again and apply a protective balm and an SPF cream.

As we age our skin turnover decreases creating a build up of dull looking skin, this treatment:

  • Reduces fine lines and acne scarring
  • Removes vellous hair
  • Increases cell turnover promoting younger, fresher skin
  • Removes trapped oil and dirt
  • Safe treatment for all skin types and ages
  • Results are immediately visible
  • Better penetration of your skincare products
  • No downtime required, you can get back to your routine immediately.

Dermaplaning is a great treatment for anyone with dry skin, fine lines, pigmentation and acne scarring. It is particularly beneficial for ageing skin to assist with cell turnover. Unfortunately we are unable to treat anyone with active acne or other skin conditions which could be exacerbated.

No, it definitely will not, vellous hair is different from the hair on your head and eyebrows, Dermaplaning does not affect hair growth at all.

We recommend having Dermaplaning every 4-6 weeks.

  • Patients may have a treatment every 4-6 weeks
  • Aerobic exercise or vigorous physical activity should be avoided
until redness has subsided
  • Avoid direct sun exposure, including sunbeds, avoid self tanners for the first week
  • SPF 30+ must be applied daily to the treated area for a minimum of four weeks, however we recommend continued daily use
  • Twice daily cleanse the treated area with a post treatment cleanser, followed by a serum or treatment cream and follow with SPF 30+ sunscreen
