Microneedling is often combined with PRP (platelet rich plasma), which helps to boost results and healing time. It’s referred to as the “vampire facial.” This involves drawing the patient’s blood and spinning it quickly to separate the red blood cells from the yellow plasma, which is full of platelets and growth factors. How does SkinPen microneedling work?
The principle behind skin needling (microneedling) has been around for thousands of years. The microfine needles create a virtually painless “controlled injury”. When the body goes to fix that injury, it creates new collagen and elastin within the skin. It’s an effective and natural rejuvenation that offers results within a couple of treatments. It’s safe for all skin types and colours.

How does SkinPen microneedling compare to other methods of skin rejuvenation?
SkinPen procedures are non-thermal and non-ablative. Procedures may be performed on all skin tones reducing any risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or fibrotic scar tissue formation.
How long does a SkinPen microneedling procedure take?
The SkinPen is the fastest device on the market, with its 16-needle cartridge, delivering 1,920 puncture channels per second. A full-face can be treated in as little as 10 minutes. The actual application of the device and the feeling of discomfort may take several minutes however, expect the procedure to take between 30 – 60 minutes depending on the protocol used and the skin condition treated.
Do SkinPen treatments hurt?
Traditional dermal-rolling techniques proved to be bloody and painful, requiring the application of topical anaesthetic cream before treatments.
Today, with Dermapen 4, there’s no comparison. It’s the most comfortable, virtually pain-free microneedling treatment available. Numbing the area beforehand is optional, it is not even required because it’s so comfortable. Just lay back and enjoy stunning results.

Are SkinPen Treatments safe?
Yes. Only a qualified practitioner may perform SkinPen procedures under strict sterile conditions. All treatment consumables are single-use and sterile.
What is the downtime?
Localised erythema may last up to 2 days post-procedure. Your therapist will advise products that may be used immediately following a procedure to reduce any visible redness. Most patients can resume normal activities immediately after a procedure.
What are the risks of microneedling?
Microneedling is generally considered to be safe and effective, but like any procedure, it has risks. Common side effects of the procedure include:
- Skin irritation
- Swelling
- Discomfort at the site
- Redness and bruising, common for the first 48 hours
- Dryness or flaking of the skin
However, most of these should disappear after a few days. After your treatment, you should avoid swimming and using irritating soap for a while. Make up is not advised for the first 5 days.
How long until I see the microneedling results?
Though the duration to see results will vary slightly from person to person; on average you can expect to enjoy the benefits after just one microneedling procedure, within a couple of weeks. The exact duration of the results of microneedling depends on how your skin responds, your skin type, and other factors such as the severity of your skin issue. To achieve the full desired result, cumulative procedures and at-home protocols may be required.
Remember microneedling is not a quick fix. The benefits of the new collagen production often take some time to show fully because your body is actually repairing itself and growing new skin tissue. Collagen is typically formed between 30 and 200 days. A single session can see an increase of 45% of collagen.
