Dry & Irritated Eyes

Dry eye disease is one of the most common eye conditions, affecting millions of people. It occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears, or when the tears evaporate too quickly — leaving the surface of the eye exposed and uncomfortable.

Left untreated, chronic dry eye can lead to inflammation, corneal damage, and significantly reduced quality of life. Dr Tanov provides thorough assessment and tailored treatment plans to restore comfort and protect your long-term eye health.

Common Symptoms
  • Persistent dryness, burning, or stinging sensation
  • Redness and visible irritation
  • Blurred vision that fluctuates throughout the day
  • Excessive watering as a reflex response
  • Sensitivity to light, wind, or screens
Glaucoma
Eye Condition

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve — the vital connection between your eye and brain. It is most commonly caused by abnormally high pressure inside the eye, and is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide.

The most dangerous aspect of glaucoma is that it develops slowly and silently, with no pain and no noticeable vision loss until significant damage has already occurred. Early detection through regular screening is essential to preserving sight.

Warning Signs
  • Gradual loss of peripheral (side) vision
  • Tunnel vision in advanced stages
  • Blurred vision or halos around lights
  • Eye pain or pressure (in acute cases)
  • No symptoms at all in early stages — regular checks are vital
Macular Degeneration
Eye Condition

Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of central vision loss in people over 50. It affects the macula — the small but crucial area at the centre of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision used for reading, driving, and recognising faces.

There are two forms: dry AMD, which progresses slowly, and wet AMD, which can cause rapid vision loss and requires urgent treatment. With early diagnosis and the right management plan, progression can often be slowed significantly.

Warning Signs
  • Blurred or distorted central vision
  • Straight lines appearing wavy or bent
  • A dark or empty area in the centre of vision
  • Difficulty reading or recognising faces
  • Colours appearing less vivid than before

Don't Wait Until Symptoms Worsen

Many eye conditions are silent in their early stages. A specialist consultation with Dr Tanov can detect problems early — when treatment is most effective and vision loss is still preventable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I have a serious eye condition? +

Many serious eye conditions — including glaucoma and macular degeneration — develop with no obvious early symptoms. The only reliable way to detect them is through a comprehensive eye examination with specialist equipment.

How often should I have my eyes examined? +

Adults should have a full eye examination at least every two years. If you are over 40, have a family history of eye disease, or have diabetes or high blood pressure, annual checks are strongly recommended.

Can glaucoma be cured? +

Glaucoma cannot currently be cured, but it can be effectively managed. With early diagnosis and treatment — including eye drops, laser therapy, or surgery — vision loss can be significantly slowed or prevented.

Is macular degeneration treatable? +

Dry AMD currently has no cure, though lifestyle changes and supplements may slow progression. Wet AMD can be treated with injections (anti-VEGF therapy) which, when started early, can preserve and in some cases improve vision.

What causes dry eyes? +

Dry eye disease can be caused by reduced tear production, poor tear quality, screen use, certain medications, hormonal changes, or environmental factors such as air conditioning or wind. A specialist assessment identifies the underlying cause and guides treatment.

Are eye conditions hereditary? +

Yes — glaucoma, macular degeneration, and certain other conditions have a strong genetic component. If a close family member has been diagnosed, your risk is significantly higher and regular screening is especially important.

What happens at an eye health consultation with Dr Tanov? +

Your consultation includes a comprehensive assessment of your vision, eye pressure, retinal health, and optic nerve. Advanced imaging such as OCT scanning may be used. Dr Tanov will discuss findings with you in detail and recommend a personalised treatment or monitoring plan.

Can dry eyes cause permanent damage? +

Chronic, untreated dry eye disease can cause inflammation and corneal damage over time. Early treatment reduces discomfort and protects the long-term health of the ocular surface.

Do I need a GP referral to see Dr Tanov? +

No referral is needed for a private consultation. You can book directly through the website or by calling the clinic. If you have been referred by your GP or another specialist, Dr Tanov is happy to receive referral letters.
