What Are Thread Veins or Redness?

Thread veins, also known as spider veins or broken capillaries, are tiny blood vessels that sit just beneath the surface of the skin. When they enlarge or remain permanently dilated, they become visible as fine red, purple or blue lines.

They appear most commonly on the cheeks, nose and chin, though they can also develop on the neck, chest, legs and hands. Their medical name is telangiectasia. Visible facial redness can occur on its own or alongside thread veins, often as a result of rosacea.

Lumecca IPL: Advanced Technology for Redness & Thread Veins

At Dr Tanov Eye and Aesthetics, we use Lumecca IPL by InMode, one of the most powerful IPL systems available. It delivers up to three times more energy than standard IPL devices, which is why most patients see a visible improvement in just one to three sessions.

Lumecca uses photothermolysis to target haemoglobin within the blood vessel, converting light into heat, collapsing the vessel and allowing the body to reabsorb it naturally. The surrounding skin is left completely unaffected. Two handpieces with different wavelength spectra allow us to safely treat a wider range of skin tones, including darker tones.

How Does the Lumecca IPL Treatment Work?

Straightforward, comfortable and quick — here is what to expect

The treatment itself is straightforward, comfortable and quick. Ultrasound gel is applied to the treatment area, and you will be given protective goggles to wear throughout the session. The Lumecca handpiece is then guided across the skin, delivering controlled flashes of intense pulsed light precisely where it is needed.

Each pulse of light feels like a brief, light snap of elastic against the skin. It is over in a fraction of a second. Most patients find the treatment very manageable, and no numbing cream is required. Sessions typically take between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

Immediately after treatment, the skin may appear slightly red and feel warm, similar to mild sunburn. This usually settles within an hour. Over the following 24 to 48 hours, any pigmented areas may darken temporarily before flaking away.

Thread Veins & Redness Treatment Process with Lumecca IPL

A step-by-step breakdown of your treatment journey

1
Consultation
Dr Tanov examines your skin, discusses your concerns and reviews your medical history. He identifies the areas to treat, confirms your Fitzpatrick skin type and recommends the most appropriate handpiece and plan for your skin.
2
Patch Test
A patch test on a small, discreet area confirms how your skin responds to the light energy and establishes the safest, most effective settings for your skin type. You wait at least 24 hours before your first full session.
3
Preparation
Come with clean skin, free of makeup, moisturiser and skincare. Avoid sun exposure and fake tan for at least four weeks before your session, and stop using retinols, AHA and BHA products at least one week before treatment.
4
Treatment
Ultrasound gel and protective goggles are applied. The handpiece is guided across the skin, delivering precisely calibrated flashes of light to the targeted veins and redness. Each pulse feels like a brief, light elastic snap. Sessions take 30 to 45 minutes.
5
Immediately After
The skin may appear slightly flushed and feel warm, much like mild sunburn, settling within an hour. A soothing product and SPF are applied before you leave, and you can return to your day straight away.
6
Results & Follow-up
Thread veins may blanch and begin to disappear within days. The most visible improvement develops over one to two weeks as the body reabsorbs the treated vessels. A course of 1 to 3 sessions is recommended, with maintenance every 6 to 12 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will I see the results?+

Many patients notice an improvement after their very first session. Thread veins can begin to blanch and fade within a few days as the body reabsorbs the collapsed vessels. The most visible results for both redness and thread veins typically develop within one to two weeks of each session, and continue to improve as the course progresses.

How long do results last?+

Once a thread vein has been successfully treated and reabsorbed, that particular vein will not return. Results typically last between 6 and 12 months, varying with skin type, lifestyle and triggers such as rosacea. Daily SPF, managing rosacea triggers and maintenance sessions every 6 to 12 months help preserve results over the long term.

What does the treatment feel like?+

Each pulse of Lumecca light feels like a brief, light snap of elastic against the skin, with a flash of bright light. It passes very quickly and most patients find it entirely manageable without numbing cream. Afterwards the skin may feel warm and look slightly flushed, similar to mild sunburn, which settles within an hour.

What are the side effects?+

Common, temporary effects include redness and gentle warming that subsides within an hour; temporary darkening of pigmented spots over 24 to 48 hours that then flake away to reveal clearer skin; a brief colour change in treated vessels; occasional mild bruising around larger or deeper veins; and short-term sensitivity to sunlight, which is why daily SPF is essential. Rarely, temporary lightening or darkening of the skin can occur, most often linked to sun exposure close to a session.

How do I care for my skin after treatment?+

Keep the treated skin clean and avoid makeup for the rest of the treatment day. Apply SPF 50 daily for at least four weeks and avoid direct sun. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser to soothe sensitivity, and avoid retinols, AHA and BHA products for at least 48 hours after each session. Skip saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and vigorous exercise for 24 to 48 hours, and avoid fake tan or sunbeds for at least four weeks before and after each session. Do not pick at flaking pigmentation, and attend all recommended follow-up sessions.

How many sessions will I need?+

Most patients see significant improvement in just 1 to 3 sessions, considerably fewer than many other IPL systems thanks to Lumecca's higher power output. The exact number depends on the size and number of thread veins, the severity of redness and your skin type. Your practitioner will give you a clear, realistic estimate at your consultation.

Can Lumecca IPL treat rosacea?+

Yes. Lumecca IPL is one of the most effective non-surgical options for reducing the visible blood vessels and persistent redness of rosacea. While there is no permanent cure for rosacea, a course significantly reduces the number and visibility of dilated vessels, calms generalised redness and helps restore a more even complexion. Managing your personal triggers alongside treatment helps maintain results for longer.

Is the treatment safe for darker skin tones?+

Yes, with the right equipment and the right practitioner. We use two Lumecca handpieces with differing wavelength spectra, which extend safe and effective treatment to a wider range of skin tones than many standard IPL devices. Your skin tone is carefully assessed at consultation so the appropriate handpiece and settings are selected to minimise the risk of pigment change while achieving the best result.

Are thread veins dangerous?+

Facial thread veins and generalised redness are almost always a cosmetic concern and pose no medical risk, rarely indicating any serious underlying condition. Occasionally, thread veins on the legs can be associated with underlying venous insufficiency, which is why a consultation with a specialist is always worthwhile before treatment begins.

Can thread veins come back after treatment?+

The vessels that are successfully treated are permanently sealed and will not return. However, new thread veins can form over time if underlying causes such as sun exposure, rosacea, hormonal changes or genetics continue to affect the skin. Consistent sun protection, managing lifestyle triggers and attending maintenance sessions every 6 to 12 months significantly reduce the rate at which new vessels develop.

Am I a good candidate?+

You are likely a good candidate if you have visible thread veins, persistent facial redness or rosacea that you would like to treat, and you are in good general health. A consultation at Dr Tanov Eye and Aesthetics will confirm your suitability, assess your skin and the severity of your concern, perform a patch test, and provide a clear, personalised treatment plan tailored to your skin and goals.
