What Is Laser Hair Removal for Women?

Laser hair removal is a medical treatment that reduces unwanted hair by targeting hair follicles with light energy. The laser is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, creating heat that damages the follicle and slows future growth, without harming the surrounding skin.

For women, it offers a long-term solution compared to shaving or waxing. At Dr Tanov Eye and Aesthetics in Newcastle, we use the Candela GentlePro laser, suitable for all skin types and tailored to your individual needs.

How Does Laser Hair Removal for Women Work?

Laser hair removal works by targeting hair during its active growth phase, when the hair is still connected to the root. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, turning into heat that damages the follicle and slows future growth.

Not all hairs are in this phase at the same time, which is why multiple sessions are needed. Each session targets a new set of active hair follicles, resulting in a gradual, long-lasting reduction.

Over time, the hair that grows back becomes finer, lighter and less noticeable. Most women typically need around 6-8 sessions, spaced a few weeks apart, depending on the treatment area. Facial areas may need more frequent sessions, while body areas are spaced further apart.

After each session, treated hairs naturally shed from the skin within 1-3 weeks, which is a normal part of the process.

The Laser Hair Removal Process

A step-by-step breakdown of your treatment journey

1
Consultation
A trained practitioner carries out a thorough skin and hair assessment, reviews your medical history, assesses your skin tone and hair colour using the Fitzpatrick scale, and recommends the right wavelength, plan and number of sessions for you.
2
Patch Test
A patch test is always performed before your first full session. The Candela GentlePro is applied to a small, discreet area to confirm your skin responds well and to set the safest, most effective settings. Allow 24 to 48 hours before your first full session.
3
Preparation
Shave the treatment area 24 hours before each session, leaving the follicle root intact for the laser to target. Do not wax, pluck or thread beforehand, and avoid sun exposure and fake tan for at least four weeks before each session.
4
Treatment
Your skin is cleansed and you are given protective goggles. The Candela GentlePro handpiece delivers precise pulses to each follicle, while the Dynamic Cooling Device releases a fine cool mist before each pulse to keep you comfortable. Small areas take around 15 minutes, larger areas up to 60.
5
Aftercare
A soothing gel is applied to calm the skin, and you receive clear, simple aftercare instructions to follow at home. You can return to work and your normal routine straight away.
6
Follow-up Sessions
Sessions are spaced 4 to 12 weeks apart depending on the area and your hair growth cycle. We recommend a full course of around 8 sessions for optimum results, with occasional annual maintenance afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will I see the results?+

After each session, the treated hairs shed over the following 1 to 3 weeks, leaving the area noticeably smoother. Hair density reduces progressively with each session. Most women notice a clear difference after the third or fourth treatment, with results continuing to improve for several weeks after the final session.

How long do the results last?+

Once a hair follicle has been permanently damaged by the laser, it will not produce hair again. After a full course, most women experience a significant, long-lasting reduction, and any hair that regrows tends to be much finer and lighter. For hormone-influenced areas like the face and bikini, one or two maintenance sessions a year help keep results at their best.

Is laser hair removal painful?+

The Candela GentlePro is one of the most comfortable laser systems available. The Dynamic Cooling Device releases a cool mist before each pulse, significantly reducing discomfort. Most women describe the sensation as a brief, warm snap, similar to the flick of a rubber band, and find it far more comfortable than waxing. No numbing cream is needed for most areas, though it can be used for sensitive areas on request.

What are the side effects?+
  • Mild redness and slight swelling around the treated follicles immediately after the session, which typically settle within a few hours.
  • A warm or sunburn-like feeling on the skin for a short time after treatment.
  • Temporary darkening of the treated hairs as they push out of the skin before shedding, which is completely normal.
  • Rare: temporary lightening or darkening of skin colour in the treated area, most often associated with sun exposure close to a session.
  • Very rare: blistering or skin irritation, greatly reduced by the cooling mechanism in the Candela GentlePro and by avoiding sun exposure around each appointment.
How do I look after my skin after treatment?+
  • Apply a soothing gel or aloe vera to calm any redness or warmth directly after your session.
  • Avoid sun exposure on the treated area for at least two weeks and apply SPF 50 sunscreen daily.
  • Do not wax, pluck or thread between sessions. Shaving is perfectly fine.
  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and vigorous exercise for 48 hours after each session.
  • Do not apply fake tan or use sunbeds for at least four weeks before and after each session.
  • Keep the treated skin clean and moisturised between appointments.
  • Attend all sessions as scheduled to make the most of your course.
How many sessions will I need?+

We recommend a full course of around 8 sessions for most women, though the exact number depends on the area, your hair density, hair colour, skin type and how your body responds. Facial areas, which are particularly influenced by hormones, may need slightly more sessions. Our practitioners give you a clear, honest estimate at your consultation.

Can laser hair removal help with PCOS hair growth?+

Yes. PCOS can cause excess or fast-growing hair on the face, chin, neck, chest and abdomen, and laser hair removal is a very popular choice as it significantly reduces hair density in affected areas. Because hormonal activity can continue to stimulate new follicles, women with PCOS may need occasional maintenance sessions after their initial course. We build a realistic plan that accounts for this.

Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin tones?+

Yes, when the right technology is used. The Candela GentlePro uses dual-wavelength technology, so the 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength can be selected for darker skin tones. It penetrates deeper and carries a much lower risk of affecting surface pigmentation. Many clinics cannot safely treat darker skin because they use single-wavelength systems.

Can I shave between sessions?+

Yes, and we encourage it. Shaving keeps the area tidy without disturbing the follicle root that the laser needs to target. You must not wax, pluck, thread or use depilatory creams between sessions, as these remove the root entirely and reduce the effectiveness of your treatments.

Does laser hair removal work on facial hair in women?+

Yes, and it is one of the most popular applications for our female patients. The upper lip, chin, jaw, cheeks and sides of the face are all commonly treated. Facial hair in women can be caused by genetics, hormonal changes, the menopause or PCOS. The Candela GentlePro is well-suited to fine to medium facial hair across a range of skin tones, and facial areas typically need sessions every 4 to 6 weeks.

Am I a good candidate?+

You are likely a good candidate if you have unwanted dark hair on your face or body that you would like to significantly reduce, and you are in good general health. A consultation at our Newcastle clinic will confirm your suitability, assess your skin and hair type, perform a patch test, and provide a clear, personalised plan.
