What Is Age & Sun Spot Removal?

Solar Lentigo (Age Spot) is an innocuous lesion caused by chronic sun exposure. It involves the proliferation of melanocytes and the deposition of melanin within keratinocytes in the affected area. Solar lentigines are highly prevalent, mostly in individuals older than 40 years. People also refer to them as age spots, sun spots, or liver spots.

This condition is characterised by well-defined, flat lesions that are circular, oval, or irregular. Their colour may range from skin-coloured to tan, dark brown, or black. Their size also varies, from a few millimetres to several centimetres in diameter. They may also present with a scaly sensation. The lesions commonly appear in clusters of similar spots on exposed areas, such as the face and the backs of the hands. The condition affects both fair- and dark-skinned individuals, but it is more common in people with lighter complexions.

Here at our Newcastle clinic, we safely remove these lesions using cutting-edge CryoPen freezing technology and light-based treatments. Our treatment destroys clustered pigments while preserving healthy skin tissue.

How Do We Perform Age & Sun Spot Removal?

A careful, methodical approach that targets only the pigment

Dr Tanov uses a careful, methodical approach to fade your age and sun spots. First, he checks each spot to make sure it is safe to treat. We gently cleanse the treatment area. If we opt for a laser or IPL treatment, we will apply a cooling gel or numbing cream to you.

Then the CryoPen or light-based applicator is aimed straight at the spots, breaking down the trapped pigment in minutes. We finish by soothing the skin and protecting it with high-factor SPF. You head home straightaway while your skin gets on with the natural healing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the treatment painful?+

Not at all. Most people just feel a brief cold sensation or a quick, mild snap on the skin. We can pop a numbing cream on first if you would like to feel even more comfortable.

What is the recovery like?+

You are free to resume your usual schedule after the procedure. The marks will darken and eventually fall off within one to two weeks.

Who is suitable for this treatment?+

It works wonders for people with flat, brown lesions caused by age spots or sun damage on the face, hands, or other parts of the body.

Are the results permanent?+

Yes. Once a spot is treated and removed, it will not return to that exact spot. However, you must wear a high-SPF sunscreen daily to prevent new spots from forming.

Are there any risks?+

The risks are minimal when our medical team performs the treatment. You may notice some short-term redness or mild crusting, which clears as fresh, even skin is revealed.
